Corrective Reading Series Guide - Levels A - C

Description

Corrective Reading provides intensive and accelerated reading intervention. The Direct Instruction program delivers tightly sequenced, carefully planned lessons that give struggling students the structure and practice necessary to become skilled, fluent readers and empowered learners. Four levels for decoding plus four for comprehension address the varied reading deficits and skill levels found among older students.

The Series Guide provides instruction on how to deliver a placement test and how to organize your groups and lesson planning.  It provides an overview of the entire program and the scope and sequence as well as teaching techniques and lesson examples.

Decoding Strand

Each level of SRA’s Corrective Reading Decoding program has features that have been demonstrated through research studies to be effective in improving student performance.

The Decoding strand directly addresses all critical reading components including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Note that vocabulary and comprehension are addressed more thoroughly by the companion Corrective Reading Comprehension strand.

With Corrective Reading Decoding, you will have:

  • a well-organized scope and sequence
  • coordinated and aligned practice materials and activities
  • assessment to help with proper placement and movement of instruction
  • skills and strategies that are presented explicitly
  • complex tasks broken down into component parts
  • brief, frequent practice to ensure mastery of each of the processes and skills
  • appropriate pacing of lessons
  • adequate practice and review

Comprehension Strand

The Corrective Reading Comprehension programs explicitly teach the vocabulary, background knowledge, and reasoning skills that support the understanding of text.

With Corrective Reading Comprehension, you will:

  • Provide extensive practice in following directions to help students read carefully and attend to details.
  • Build vocabulary skills and common information that students can carry over into the general classroom.
  • Develop higher order thinking tactics used by successful readers.
  • Apply prior knowledge, make inferences, and analyze evidence.
