Step into the World of Workplace Learning

A Collection of Authentic Workplace Materials

Job seekers need to have the skills demanded in the working world. The World of Workplace Learning can help. It is a set of 49 examples of authentic material used in a variety of workplaces. The objective of this publication is to aid educators and trainers in exploring new ways of helping learners acquire key skills needed in the workplace and in daily life.

The material, such as brochures and contracts, is taken directly from real companies operating in the marketplace. These documents are presented in a way that relates them to the nine essential skills needed in the work world, as outlined in the 1994 Essential Skills Research Study by HRDC. These skills are found in virtually all jobs. They include:

  1. Reading
  2. Using documents
  3. Oral communications
  4. Computer use
  5. Writing
  6. Numeracy
  7. Working with others
  8. Continuous learning
  9. Thinking skills (such as problem-solving and decision-making)

To understand how this material is being used in the workplace, each document is examined while looking at such items as the type, source, and purpose of the material.

Educators and trainers have always been interested in linking skills developed in the classroom and skills used in the workplace. What better way to do this than to work with real workplace materials; everything from police incident reports to winter tire selector guides, and from newsletters and contracts to tables and graphs. The documents are used to develop learning experiences that connect the classroom with the workplace. They have been assembled by HRDC with the cooperation of a variety of different Canadian workplaces.
