Employability Skills - Creating My Future

Student Portfolio

A key component of career planning is the ability to demonstrate one's accomplishments both from within school and outside school. This portfolio allows students to demonstrate their progress in regards to career, educational, and personal goals.

Continually updated by the student, the portfolio allows students and teachers to measure and judge their own growth. Ideally, the portfolio will be shared with a variety of audiences, including parents, teachers, counsellors, employers, etc.

The program is based, in part, on the Employability Skills PROFILE developed by the Conference Board of Canada. A copy of this Profile is included in both the Instructor's Guide and the Student Portfolio.

Students will be able to summarize their documented accomplishments into a working portfolio, and use it to:

  • make career path choices
  • gain employment
  • enhance scholarship applications
  • prepare for post-secondary education entrance
  • obtain a volunteer position
  • fill out job applications
  • communicate between home and school
  • develop self-esteem, promote abilities and successes

Instructor's Guide

An easy-to-follow format allows teachers to quickly and easily incorporate the Employability Skills: Creating my Future into their classroom. The instructional guide provides teachers and counsellors with ideas on how to incorporate the portfolio into the school setting, and enhance acceptance of the process for students.

Teachers will gain insight on how to introduce and discuss the following skill areas with their students:

  • Employability Skills
  • Academic Skills
  • Personal Management Skills
  • Teamwork Skills
  • Setting Goals
  • Creating the Portfolio
Extensive development and field testing has been done by the Calgary Educational Partnership, a consortium of Calgary area schools and major business partners.

The program has also been reviewed nationally.
