How We Lived: Canada's Century of Change photo essay by Mary Vincent

  • The 1900s
    This comprehensive site offers students a glimpse into life in 1900. It provides information on population, immigration, religion, youth, and much more. Students can also examine the changes that have taken place over the years.
  • Canada
    Students can examine the various faces of Canada through this site dedicated to capturing the many aspects of Canadian living. From the fishing wharves of the east coast to the mountainous west coast, Canada's vast countryside is vividly portrayed.
My Father's Escapes memoir by Joseph Pivato
  • World War II
    This detailed site gives a chronology of the events leading to and the events during World War II. It contains many references to Canada's involvement in the war. Ask students to investigate the site and report back to the class with the three most interesting facts they find.
  • Photos of War
    This site provides students with various photos depicting the battle of the Axis and the Allies during WWII. In viewing these images, students will find it easy to imagine what people in Europe endured during the six years of war as bombed out homes and impoverished people are seen throughout the European countryside. Note: two photos have sensitive content.
  • Italy in WWII
    Students can examine Mussolini's rise to power and Italy's role in WWII. Detailed information is given on the various aspects of Italy's warfare, including aircraft, weapons and other interesting facts. Discuss the information on this site as a class. What would students have done if they lived in Italy during this time? How would they have felt?
  • Map of Italy
    This detailed map of Italy shows northern Italy and can give some perspective to the story of Pivato's father. Ask students to trace the father's escape route as best they can.
  • Canada's Role in Wartime
    This site, from Veteran Affairs Canada, provides students with a look at issues surrounding Canada's soldiers. Further information is provided in links to various wars and war associations.

  • Biography of Alice Walker
    This Web site provides a detailed biography of, and bibliography for, Alice Walker. The site includes the same poem as appears in the Anthology, "Remember," and an explication of it. Students can read and discuss the explication in small groups.
  • Black History in Canada
    This Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation Web site includes information on the history of black Canadians. Discuss some of the events on the timeline.
  • Slavery in America
    This comprehensive site offers numerous links and information on slavery and those who played an important role during this time in American history.
    • Invite students to read several of the personal accounts and then choose one person's account (in whole or part) to read aloud in role. Note that some accounts include mature and sensitive content.

    Students can visit this publisher's Web site to find out more about the artist who created the image on Anthology page 115.

 

The Gift: How One Act of Kindness Changed a Life anecdote by Monty Hall as told to Robert Kiener

  • Monty Hall
    This site provides students with a biography of Monty Hall, as well as many of his career highlights. After students have read some of the information on the site, return to a discussion of the selection. How does what they have read change their response to the selection?
  • Variety Club
    Students can explore Variety Village's Manitoba branch, which was co-founded by Monty Hall.
  • Paying it Forward
    Students can share the stories of people who have participated in the "pay it forward" movement. They can also access other organizations that seek to promote random acts of kindness. Discuss why an individual would choose to help others, even when it sometimes means self-sacrifice.

    In this interview with writer Alistair MacLeod, the author discusses his career as a writer, and professor of literature. He also speaks of the influences on his writing. Encourage students to read and discuss the interview, and then return to a discussion of the selection.

    This Web site provides numerous links for this legendary Sherpa. Students can read several other obituaries that appeared worldwide. Have them read one other obituary and compare its content and style with the one in the Anthology.

    Invite students to explore this Web site dedicated to climbing Mount Everest. Numerous links are provided, including links to climbing teams, climbing glossary and even the company founded by Babu Chhiri.

    The Hockey Hall of Fame's Web site provides students with an in-depth look at hockey. It provides records and rankings, trivia, news and much more.
  • Heritage Minutes Project
    This site is an excellent resource for teachers. Teachers can outline a plan for students to design their own Heritage Minute. Lesson plans are provided. Challenge students to develop a Heritage Minute to represent Freddie Sasakamoose.
  • Allen Sapp
    By visiting this site for the Allen Sapp Gallery, students can find out more about the artist who created the image Big Boys Playing Hockey on Anthology page 140. They can also view other images by the artist.
