Saskatchewan is the world's largest producer of potash. Here is an activity to help you gather information to put on a map about the potash industry in Saskatchewan. 1. Visit the Natural Resources Canada Web site. 2. Begin by clicking on "Subject Listing" on the menu bar at the top of the screen. When the page opens, scroll down to find the "Mining" subheading, and then click on "Mining in Canada." 3. Go to "Mines in Canada," and then click on "Advanced Search." 4. Conduct a search in "Non-Metals". Select "Potash" under the "Materials" menu and "All Types" under the 'Type of Mine' menu. Choose Saskatchewan as the Province/Territory. 5. List the name of the company that operates the mine, and the name of the place in Saskatchewan where it is located. Click here to download an organizer on which to collect your information. 6. Once you have a complete list, click here to download a map of Saskatchewan. Using InfoCanada Saskatchewan and an atlas, find the locations for the mines you listed in step 5. Label them on your map. Create a legend using a pictorial symbol to represent "potash mine" on your map. |
