The
Weather Office
Since weather is current and constantly changing,
it is an excellent way to make geography relevant to students. The Weather
Office site from Environment Canada provides a map of current weather
systems across North America. Students can access information for specific
regions. They can also get the five-day forecast and view radar and satellite
images.
Weather
Winners
This site from Environment Canada provides information
about Canadian weather records. You can find out which cities are the
"winners" in several categories, such as the snowiest, the foggiest, the
driest, and the coldest. There are also categories such as "most typical
Canadian cities” and "most comfortable cities." Students can search
for weather records in the region by city or by weather event.
Answer Key
Weather
Winners!
The
Environment
Canada Web site and activity can help generate students' interest
in climate and weather in general and in the Appalachian Highland in particular.
From the table, ask students to make observations about weather and climate
in the region. Once students have completed their maps, review the climate
and weather patterns described in Chapter 2 of the Appalachian
Highland Student Book.
After
students have completed the activity, review their responses to the Web
site evaluation and discuss the reasons for their answers.
